Well tonight ended with a bang. Ga’len promptly reported this evening issues with the HellFleet KB. Well as we know, not having a killmail to share is about the worse thing that can happen to a pirate so I had to jump in.
After a lot of review of the system, it was clear that a recently loaded VM image was causing huge system load. It was a bit confusing at first as I had placed firm limits around the VM, yet it was consuming over 3x the limits. Promptly the VM was taken out back and shot, yet the server was not quite happy. After a reboot from hell (I actually had to call the data center and get someone to walk down and hit the power button) we were back up, yet very slow.
Further investigation showed that the maintenance scripts that help performance on the KB database had failed the last few times and didn’t report that. Great, now I had to do a backup and run the script manually (2 hours all said). After that was done all the killboards where back up, but I felt things could go a bit faster. Finally I did about 2 hours of index magic and we are running stronger than ever. I also snuck in the long awaited MySQL upgrade to the .49 release (when this was first planned it was .33).
So for those that could not get to the kills tonight, our apologies, but I think the new speed will more than make up for it. Also stay tuned we are very close to launching the new Ransom Board service completely free of charge and open to all.
